Sarvis, Donald E.

LORIS | Donald Elbert Sarvis, 68, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Loris Community Hospital following an illness.

He was born July 15, 1939 in Tabor City, North Carolina, a son of the late Ronnie Elbert Sarvis and the late Lena Mae Soles Sarvis. Mr. Sarvis proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, during the Cold War Era. An avid fisherman and hunter, Mr. Sarvis enjoyed making fishing nets and building boats. Mr. Sarvis was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent, as well as various other leadership roles within the church. Mr. Sarvis started Boy Scouts Troop 822 in the Mt. Vernon community, and he served as Scout Master for 11 years. He was a Webelos leader for two years and also served as a Sponsored Organization Representative. Mr. Sarvis loved working with children and youth. He helped start the React Team in Loris and he was a Mason.

Mr. Sarvis was predeceased by one sister, Donna Sue Sarvis Hulon; and one great-granddaughter, Nicole Paige Sarvis.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Gertrude ''Trudy'' Platt Sarvis of the home; three children, Dianna Sarvis of Loris, Doris Sarvis Prince and her husband, Teddy, of Virginia Beach, Va. and Daniel ''Danny'' Sarvis and his wife, Connie, of Loris; one sister, Ronnie Gail Sarvis Thompson of High Point, N.C.; two brothers, Thurston Sarvis and his wife, Nancy, of High Point, N. C. and Johnny Sarvis of the home; eight grandchildren, Russell Sarvis, Derrick Sarvis, Wesley Prince and his wife, Jeanina Prince, Megan Prince, D. J. Sarvis, Christy Sarvis, Cory Sarvis and Matthew Sarvis; and one great-granddaughter, Lizzie Faith Sarvis.

The family received friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2008 at Ward Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2008 from the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rory Thigpen, the Rev. Earl Elvis and the Rev. Bill Thompson officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Platt Cemetery, Little River.
