Memorial Day Flag Placement in Florence - Recap

On May 26 Scouts came in force to place flags at the National Cemetery in Florence.  I was there with my family to participate.  Jay Holcombe, a member of the SC National Guard, gave the keynote address.  Jay is also a Scout leader in Florence.  I was impressed by the number of Scouts who attended in uniform.  The event was a sea of khaki and blue.  We had Scouts form Myrtle Beach, Hemingway, Conway, Aynor, and Florence attend.  I anticipate over three quarters of the volunteers were members of the Boy Scouts of America.  Thank you for making us look great and providing a valuable learning opportunity for your Scouts!

Youth Protection 2.0

On March 1, 2018, Youth Protection 2.0 was launched.  All registered leaders must take this training prior to Octoaber 1, 2018.  The training can be taken online at my.scouting.org or via a classroom session.  A DVD with the classroom materials was mailed to your unit's Committee Chair as well as the currently registered Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, or Advisor.  Unit Commissioners also received a copy of the materials.  You can access the materials below either by adding it to your Dropbox or downloading all files via a zip file (131 MB)

Camp Coker Update

ECO Lodge Construction
Contstruction began yesterday on a new Eco Lodge to be located next to the ECO Hut.  The 40'x60' shelter was staked out, graded, and the first few post holes dug yesterday.  Ecology Merit Badges will be taught under the shelter moving out of the boathouse.

New STEM Program
STEM programs seem to be the rage in scouting and now we are prepared to join that trend. Camp Coker has worked out a plan with Northeastern Technical College to offer a unique STEM program. Scouts 14 and older can participate in a program that will day trip them to the college campus for STEM merit badge instruction. Offerings are Robotics, Electricity, Electronics and Engineering. All courses will be taught in the college labs by actual college professors. This program will offer scouts a chance to explore career opportunities and the chance to earn REAL college credit hours.

Council Should Patch Design Contest

The Pee Dee Area Council is accepting designs for a new Council Shoulder Patch (CSP).  The new patch will be available for sale in our Scout Shop as an alternative to the patch currently being sold by BSA National.  Submissions need to be in color, but can be a picture of a hand drawn design.  Finalists will have their art digitized by a graphic designer before final selection.  Submissions can be sent to peedee.areacouncil@scouting.org.  An appropriate award will be given to the winning design.  Contest is open to individuals who are registered members of the Boy Scouts of America.
