Here is a great opportunity for scouts to work on Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge while they provide a worthwhile bit of service to those who could use some help by working with children with disabilities.

Please contact Amy Brown if you are interested in helping info is excerpt of email to me.. this is not a scout event however it is going to be a rewarding event...if you or your scout goes please let me know.. I would love to hear about scouts helping in the community. ..........your email to reach out to you and see if any of the other troop leaders or scouts might have an interest in volunteering to do some scout activities with our special needs camp at Beach Church July 10-13th for our camping/outdoors theme week. Camp Smiles is a nonprofit organization serving children in the Grand Strand who have Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other disabilities that impact their daily life. We offer 4 weeks of camp designed with modified activities to meet the need of our campers. Most of our staff are students at CCU studying to be educators. We also have peer models from the community to assist the students during camp as well. All of our services are provided at no cost to our families! We rely on donations and fundraising events throughout the year. I am the assistant director of camp this year and reaching out to invite the community to be a part of our camp activities relating to the weekly themes. I thought the Boy Scouts could volunteer to participate in activities with the 22 campers (7 are in wheel chairs). Our staff plans the activities around the weekly theme and modifies them as needed for their camp group. I am open to ideas on camping/outdoor related activities that you think the Boy Scouts would like to be a part of with our group......maybe tying various knots, preparing simple snacks they eat while camping, etc. Please let me know if any of the other troop leaders are interested in visiting camp the week of July 10th-13th. We are at Beach Church for Camp Smiles from 8:30 am-2:30 pm (M-Th). I look forward to working with you guys!
